Terry Harbolick - Cary
MA, LCMHCA, NCC, NCSC
After growing up in New Jersey and most recently residing in Virginia, I am thrilled to have settled in the great state of North Carolina! I earned my Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Susquehanna University (PA) and I then went on to receive my Master of Arts in Counseling (with a specialization in School Counseling) from Marymount University (VA). As a school counselor and mental health interventionist, I had the privilege of collaborating with families and community agencies for the past 5+ years in order to overcome systemic barriers to providing mental health support. I am currently pursuing licensure as a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor Associate (LCMHC-A).Â
Working as a school counselor has shown me the paramount importance of creating an authentic relationship with clients; providing a safe, open environment is my top priority as a therapist. In the world of private practice, I am eager to counsel adults on an individual basis and provide general coaching within family structures. My work with adults primarily focuses on providing psychoeducational skills to alleviate maladaptive behaviors and better cope with stressors so that individuals and families feel they can more successfully navigate their daily lives.
I have extensive experience and training in areas such as:Â
Anxiety and adjustment disorders
Depression and other mood disorders
Trauma and Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs)
Parent coaching (school-aged through young adulthood)
Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
Familial conflict
Suicide assessment, intervention, and prevention
Additionally, I am also able to help individuals understand and cope with the following:
Stress management
Women’s issues
Grief and loss
Emotional regulation
Executive functioning deficits
Communication skills
Life transitions
LGBTQ+ identity exploration
My ultimate goal is to build upon one’s strengths in order to not only strengthen our own working relationship as client-provider, but to ultimately showcase the innate resilience and grit I believe every person possesses. My passions as a therapist are rooted in helping individuals and families overcome obstacles and alleviate systemic barriers. I firmly believe every client deserves equitable access to affordable, high-quality mental health care and resources to mitigate societal marginalization. As a therapist, I acknowledge how the intersections of one’s identity can impact the therapeutic relationship; I am proud to be LGBTQ+ affirming as a provider and am quick to recognize my own biases in order to better serve my clients.Â
My clinical approach is most commonly influenced by Person-Centered Therapy, Adlerian Therapy, the Gottman Method, Family Systems Therapy, and Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT) modalities. My goal is to cater my approach to the needs of the individual or family in order to remain present in our work together. I am excited to connect with you to build an open and honest relationship, foster and cultivate your strengths, and cheer you on as you seek to reach your personal goals!
