Shaina Scolnick -
Cary

LCMHCA

I was born in North Carolina, moved to Ohio for a few years in my childhood, and then moved back to NC for my late childhood. My family couldn't stay away! I completed my Bachelor of Science in Psychology with a concentration in Human Services, along with a Studio Art minor. I then received my Masters in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Appalachian State University in Boone, and earned a graduate certificate in Expressive Arts. I have enjoyed a wide variety of experiences in working with clients in the last year, and feel the private practice setting enhances my counseling abilities and helps me learn more as a therapist and as a human. I have counseling experience with adults ranging from 18 to 75 years old individually with a primary focus on life transitions, anxiety, depression, self esteem, OCD symptoms, LGBTQ+ identifying issues, career counseling, substance use processing and expressive arts interventions. I feel drawn to working with anyone who is brave enough to reach out for therapeutic assistance, and feel honored to be let into any client’s world.

I have experience treating the following mental health conditions:

  • Trauma and Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs)

  • Anxiety and adjustment disorders

  • Depression and other mood disorders

  • Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)

  • Autism Spectrum Disorder

  • Suicide assessment, intervention, and prevention

In addition, I am also able to help individuals understand and cope with the following issues:

  • Stress management

  • Gender issues

  • Life Transitions

  • LGBTQ+ experiences

  • Emotional regulation

  • Sports performance pressure

  • OCD symptoms

I hope to create an environment where you feel safe and comfortable enough to laugh and cry, to play and to talk, to explore and to grow, to feel a wide range of emotions and know you are in a place where this is all supported. I believe every client is unique and therefore discovering an approach can change based upon collaboration with the client. I see the counseling process as a collaborative relationship between the client and counselor in an open environment where you are free to share their thoughts and feelings honestly. I also recognize that there are larger systems and societal expectations that influence everyone’s day-to-day life that can create biases, and I strive to recognize my own in order to be a better therapist for clients. Some clinical approaches I incorporate include Person Centered Therapy, Solution Focused Therapy (SFT), Expressive Arts Therapy (EXA) and Feminist Theory. I am honored and eager to work with you and begin our journey together, where I hope to build you up and walk by your side during the process!
