Katie Corbin - Cary
LCMHC-A
I grew up in north Alabama and graduated from Auburn University in 2020 with degrees in Psychology and Human Development & Family Studies. I worked with university freshman programming for a year before obtaining my Masters of Counseling from the University of Tennessee. My internships focused on working with college students in distress at UTK and families in the community.Â
I am currently pursuing licensure as a Clinical Mental Health Counselor (LCMHC). Most recently, I worked as a school-based counselor in Hillsborough elementary schools. I previously worked with families with children with Autism, and a group private practice seeing children, families, and couples. In the university setting at UTK, my work focused on suicide prevention and crisis stabilization. Through these experiences, I have learned to create a welcoming space for folks and families to experience deeper connection with each other and the supports in their lives. I see clients as the experts of their own stories. I believe that everyone can grow in their understanding of self and others as they find what will help them thrive in a strengths-based perspective. I prioritize developing a strong therapeutic relationship between myself and clients which means clients can give me feedback on our counseling process and how it feels for them. Clients can ask questions about our sessions, goals, or strategies at any point. I enjoy exploring clients’ experiences while also equipping them with practical skills needed to achieve their counseling goals.
I hold a relational-cultural theoretical orientation with an emphasis on integrating different aspects of wellness. I add in interventions from Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Person-Centered, and Adlerian therapy. I am LGBTQ+ affirming and seek to understand client’s world from their perspective.Â
