Megan Cheek Garriss

LCMHCS, NCC

I am a native of North Carolina and have been providing counseling services since 2008. I earned my Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from UNC Chapel Hill and my Master’s degree in Community Counseling from Campbell University. Throughout my career, I have worked in a variety of settings, including community mental health and a women’s domestic violence shelter. I have served in both therapist and clinical leadership roles. These experiences have given me the opportunity to work with individuals and families facing a wide range of challenges, from everyday stress and life transitions to significant mental health concerns and trauma.

I believe therapy should be a place where you feel genuinely heard and supported while also gaining practical tools to help you move forward. My approach is collaborative, down-to-earth, and individualized to you. Together, we can better understand what is contributing to the challenges you are experiencing, build on your strengths, and work toward meaningful changes that carry into your everyday life.

Areas of Focus

  • Teens: The teenage years can bring significant changes in relationships, identity, emotions, school, and family life. I work to create a space where teens can feel comfortable being themselves and talking openly without feeling judged or pressured. I also help parents better understand what their teen may be experiencing and find ways to strengthen connection and communication at home.

  • Adults: I enjoy working with adults across all stages of life, including young adulthood, college, relationships and marriage, becoming a parent, parenting, divorce, career changes, empty nesting, and retirement. Therapy can provide a place to work through what is happening now while also exploring patterns or experiences from the past that may be affecting how you feel, respond, or relate to others today.

  • EMDR & Trauma: Difficult or traumatic experiences can continue to affect us long after the experience itself has ended. You may notice anxiety, triggers, negative beliefs about yourself, relationship patterns, or emotional reactions that feel difficult to change even when you understand where they come from. I offer Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) to help teens and adults process traumatic or distressing experiences and reduce the impact they continue to have in the present. My background working with survivors of domestic violence also informs my trauma-sensitive approach to creating safety, building trust, and helping clients move forward at their own pace.

Starting therapy can feel like a big step, whether you are looking for support for yourself or for your teen. You do not have to have everything figured out before you begin. My goal is to meet you where you are, help you identify what you would like to be different, and work alongside you as you build the skills, understanding, and confidence to move forward.
