Leigh McKay

LCMHC, LMFT

I was raised in Central Illinois and have called North Carolina home for the past 20 years. I earned my Bachelor of Science in Marketing and a Master of Science in College Student Personnel Administration from Illinois State University, followed by a Master of Counseling with a focus on Marriage and Family Therapy from Messiah University.

My professional background includes working with students in university settings and serving as a community homeschool educator for seven years, where I provided both educational and emotional support to families. Since transitioning into private practice, I have focused on supporting individuals, couples, teenagers (14+), and families as they navigate life’s challenges with greater clarity and confidence.

Areas of Focus

  • Teens (14+) and families: I support teens and their families as they navigate the often overwhelming challenges of adolescence, including social pressures, school-related stress, emotional regulation, and family dynamics. My approach helps teens feel understood while also equipping parents with tools to support growth and connection at home.

  • Adults: I work with adults facing life transitions, career changes, stress, grief, and identity development. Together, we focus on building coping strategies, increasing self-awareness, and creating a more balanced and fulfilling daily life.

  • Marriage/Couples: I help couples strengthen communication, rebuild connection, and navigate conflict in a healthier way. Whether you’re working through ongoing challenges or seeking to deepen your relationship, therapy provides a structured space to grow together.

  • Women’s Health and Life Transitions:  I provide support for women navigating life transitions, including perimenopause, identity shifts, and changing family or career roles, with a focus on both emotional well-being and practical coping strategies.

Clinical Expertise & Support

I am qualified to treat a variety of mental health conditions and help individuals navigate complex life challenges, including:

  • Anxiety and Adjustment Disorders

  • Depression and Mood Disorders

  • ADHD and Executive Functioning Challenges

  • Autism Spectrum Disorder

  • Relationship Difficulties and Women’s Issues

  • Life and Career Transitions

  • Social Skills Development and Emotion Regulation

Therapeutic Approach

I believe in creating a strong therapeutic relationship that is safe, open-minded, and non-judgmental. My work is grounded in a systemic approach, acknowledging that every person and family is unique. I collaborate closely with my clients to ensure the therapeutic process fits their specific needs and goals.

I frequently integrate the following evidence-based modalities:

  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

  • Narrative Therapy

  • Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT)

  • Strengths-Based and Systems-Oriented Approaches

Starting therapy can feel like a big step. I show up as myself—honest, direct, and fully in your corner. Together, we’ll get clear on what’s not working, build practical tools, and create real, meaningful change.
