Katie Corbin

LCMHCA

Originally from North Alabama, I graduated from Auburn University in 2020 with degrees in Psychology and Human Development & Family Studies. After graduation, I worked with university freshman programming for a year before earning my Masters of Counseling from the University of Tennessee. My internships focused on supporting college students in distress at UTK and working with families within the community.

I am currently pursuing full licensure as a Clinical Mental Health Counselor (LCMHC) and certification as a Registered Play Therapist (RPT). My professional background is diverse, including roles as a school-based counselor in Hillsborough elementary schools, experience in therapeutic preschool settings, and work in group private practices supporting children, families, and couples. While at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, I specialized in suicide prevention and crisis stabilization.

Through these various experiences, I have learned to foster inclusive, welcoming spaces for individuals and families to find deeper connections with themselves and their support systems. I am dedicated to providing compassionate care to children, college students, families, and adults alike.

Areas of Training and Experience

I provide support for a wide range of mental health conditions and life challenges, including:

  • Mental Health Conditions: Anxiety, Depression, and ADHD.

  • Crisis & Trauma: Suicidal ideation, crisis stabilization, trauma, and grief/loss.

  • Family & Relationships: Familial conflict, family dynamics, and couples/marriage counseling.

  • Parenting & Reproduction: Birth trauma, postnatal mental health (PPD/PPA), and navigating the IUI/IVF process.

  • Specialized Care: Supporting families with members with intellectual disabilities or Autism.

  • Identity & Growth: LGBTQ+ identity exploration (affirming), self-acceptance, and identity struggles.

  • Life Skills: Communication, conflict resolution, emotional regulation/co-regulation, stress management, and social skills.

  • Life Transitions: Divorce, foster care/adoption, and alternate methods of building families.

Therapeutic Philosophy & Approach

I view my clients as the experts of their own stories and believe in their innate capacity for growth and self-understanding. My approach is grounded in a relational-cultural theoretical orientation with a strong emphasis on integrating all aspects of wellness.

I utilize a strengths-based perspective and prioritize a robust therapeutic relationship where feedback and questions are always encouraged. My practice integrates interventions from several evidence-based modalities:

  • Play Therapy: Employed as a primary modality and strategy for children.

  • Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT): Including skills in validation, interpersonal effectiveness, and mindfulness.

  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT).

  • Person-Centered Therapy.

  • Adlerian Therapy.

I find great fulfillment in exploring my clients' unique experiences while equipping them with the practical skills needed to thrive on their counseling journey.
